Carmel Kitchin - 1st Grade
About Me
My name is Carmel Kitchin, and I am the first grade teacher at Queen of the Universe School. I received my undergraduate degree in Elementary and Special Education from Illinois State University. My love of Reading and desire to share that love with children led me to pursue my Master’s Degree in Reading and Literacy at Benedictine University, providing me with credentials as a Reading Specialist. In first grade, a firm foundation is needed for students to develop the skills to become strong readers and writers. The Language Arts program at Queen of the Universe School is grounded in this belief and integrates reading, writing and spelling to foster literacy development. Literacy is woven into all subject areas, allowing students opportunities to integrate skills across the curriculum. Hands-on activities are also incorporated into all subject areas to actively engage students in the learning process and help them learn from discovery. Different learning styles are taken into consideration, including visual, auditory, and kinesthetic activities in lesson plans. Moreover, Catholic principles and teachings are instilled on a daily basis as the children learn in an environment focused on providing the gift of faith.

Homework
Spelling
Weekly Spelling lists are sent home each Monday. This list contains five sight words we are working on for the week as well as five words related to the phonics skill we are learning. Please practice these words each night. The students will be tested on their ability to spell the words as well as read them fluently.
Reading
Reading for 15 minutes a night is essential in order for students to build fluency. Please remember this important homework each night. It will be an asset to your child's literacy development.
I have listed some helpful links that you can try at home to give your child extra skill practice and exposure to literacy. Check them out. It is one way your child can have fun while learning at the same time.
ST Math is a computerized math program that we are using in school to help students master common core standards. Students can work on this program at home. Your child has his/her own password and should be able to log in at home using the same password we use at school. It is a fun way to practice and master those common core standards!
